Application of Calcium Carbonate in Cables

●  In PVC cable material

Calcium carbonate is used as a core filler in PVC cables. Its main functions include:

① Reduce costs

As a cheaper filler, calcium carbonate can replace high-priced resin materials and reduce formulation costs. For example, the usage in PVC cable granules can reach 10%-15%.

② Improved processing performance

Improve the fluidity of PVC, reduce the viscosity during processing, and make extrusion molding more stable.

③ Enhance mechanical properties

Adding calcium carbonate in appropriate amounts can improve the hardness, rigidity and dimensional stability of PVC cables, but excessive amounts will reduce flexibility.

④ Flame retardant auxiliary

Calcium carbonate itself is non-flammable, and it can absorb heat when decomposed at high temperatures (decomposition temperature is about 825°C), which can delay combustion.

● Polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and other resin-based materials

Calcium carbonate can improve the structural strength of cables by stabilizing dimensions, enhancing hardness and surface gloss.

● Environmentally friendly cables

As the demand for lead-free and halogen-free cables grows, ultra-fine calcium carbonate has become a key component to replace traditional materials due to its environmentally friendly properties.

Differences in performance of different types of calcium carbonate

— Light calcium carbonate (precipitation method)

It is with high whiteness (≥90%), low density, and is suitable for insulation layers with high requirements for transparency and dispersion.

The limitation is that the processing fluidity is poor, which can easily lead to difficulties in extrusion of the sheath material.

— Ultra-fine Heavy Calcium Carbonate (grinding method)

It is with high cost performance, low oil absorption, and it can improve the processing performance of sheath materials, and meets environmental protection requirements. Ultra-fine heavy calcium is mostly used in sheath layers and filling layers. Replacing light calcium carbonate with heavy calcium carbonate can reduce costs while maintaining stable performance.

The limitation is that its dispersibility is poor, which may affect the surface finish.

— Nano calcium carbonate

Nano calcium carbonate can improve the toughness and conductivity of composite materials in rubber-based cables.

— Surface modified calcium carbonate

By treating with coupling agents (such as: titanates and silanes), calcium carbonate can improve its compatibility with polymer matrix and avoid agglomeration.
