1. Natural barium sulfate
Natural barium sulfate is obtained by dressing, washing and crushing of barite ore. It has a specific gravity of 4.0-4.5, with characteristics of moderate hardness, brittleness and chemical stability. Natural barium sulfate is insoluble in water, ethanol and hydrochloric acid. It is also acid and alkali resistant and water resistant. The chemical composition of natural barium sulfate or called barite is BaSO4, it is a sulfate mineral, its crystal belongs to orthorhombic system, usually in form of thick plates or columnar. Pure barite is colorless and transparent, while when containing impurities, it is dyed into various colors with white streaks, glass luster, transparent to translucent in color.
2. Precipitated barium sulfate
Precipitated barium sulfate has excellent physical properties, its shape is amorphous white powder or paste with uniform fineness. Precipitated barium sulfate is obtained by chemical method: mix barium sulfide solution and mirabilite solution with calcium and magnesium removed, then the mixture begins to react at 80°C to form precipitation. Next adjust PH value to 5-6 with process of filtration, water washing and acid washing. Then after filtering, drying and crushing, precipitated barium sulfate is finally obtained. It can also be obtained by reacting barium yellow brine with sodium sulfate solution. Precipitated barium sulfate is insoluble in water and acid. Its solubility in water is only 0.0024g/100g water. It is soluble in hot concentrated sulfuric acid. It agglomerates when dried. Industrial precipitated barium sulfate is not toxic, once it contains soluble barium compounds, it would cause poisoning.
3. Nano Barium Sulfate
Nano barium sulfate is an important industrial raw material. It has characteristics of small particle size, good dispersion and narrow particle size distribution, which endow high quality to nano barium sulfate. Therefore, more and more research is devoted to the production of nano barium sulfate particles.
Application fields
Natural barium sulfate: mainly used for X-ray contrast, white pigment, paper-making, filler and oil drilling mud.
Precipitated barium sulfate: commonly used as filler in coatings, plastics and rubber etc.
Nano barium sulfate: due to the small particle size and high specific surface area, it is widely used in electronic materials and catalysts etc.
