1. Introduction
Petroleum coke is a black solid coke. It is made from heavy oil after being cracked and coked at a high temperature of 500-550℃. While heavy oil is obtained by separating light and heavy oil after petroleum distillation. Petroleum coke is mostly black or dark gray. It is irregular in shape, with many oval pores on it, and it is an amorphous carbon. There are different types of petroleum coke, and different types of petroleum coke have different uses.
2. Four major types of petroleum coke
According to the coking method
Petroleum coke can be divided into open-hearth coke, kettle coke, delayed coke and fluidized coke. At present, the domestic main production is delayed coke.
According to the heat treatment temperature
Petroleum coke can be divided into green coke and calcined coke. Green coke contains a large amount of volatile matter, and it has low mechanical strength. While calcined coke is obtained by calcining green coke and it has high mechanical strength.
According to the sulfur level
Petroleum coke can be divided into high-sulfur coke, medium-sulfur coke and low-sulfur coke. They are mainly determined by the sulfur content of the raw materials. The higher the sulfur content, the lower the quality of the petroleum coke.
The domestic quality standards for petroleum coke are as follows:
- No. 1 coke: A coke: sulfur content ≤ 0.5%; B coke: sulfur content ≤ 0.8%
- No. 2 coke: A coke: sulfur content ≤ 1.0%; B coke: sulfur content ≤ 1.5%
- No. 3 coke: A coke: sulfur content ≤ 2.0%; B coke: sulfur content ≤ 3.0%
According to appearance and performance
Petroleum coke can be divided into sponge coke, honeycomb coke and needle coke.
3. Uses of petroleum coke
● Globally, petroleum coke is mainly used in cement industry, which accounts for about 40% of the market share; followed by prebaked anode or graphite electrode production, which accounts for 22% of the market share.
● Low-sulfur, high-quality calcined coke, e.g: needle coke, it can be used to make graphite electrodes and special carbon products, or as an important material in steelmaking industry.
● Medium sulfur, ordinary calcined coke is generally used for aluminum smelting.
●High-sulfur and ordinary raw coke are mainly used in chemical production, such as: the manufacture of calcium carbide, silicon carbide, etc., or as fuel for metal casting, glass factories, etc.
4. Market prospects
